It's The Simple Things
Who knew that having our own apartment would mean getting used to filling ice trays again. Been so used to leaning a cup against a lever and ice coming out without any effort. But I’m extremely grateful because it’s ours. They’re our ice trays I just filled a minute ago as I listen to Iron & Wine in our living room as she and the baby take a nap on our bed. All these years...

Regalitos De Ositos
My gift for Lissette (Momma Bear) from me (Poppa Bear) (with a little help from the baby, we discussed it while she slept). She’s been on a caramel candy binge so I “forced” myself to eat like 6 of them so I can quilt together some fancy candy wrapper gift wrap.  It was only natural that her gift include a pendant of a little Osito to represent our baby bear that will make his...

itsannabelle asked: 'Elsie' is one of the best albums I've heard. Details like the opening and closing track just bring it together so well. Ugh I wish I could have everyone listen to it... my customers hear it frequently haha

My Favorite Albums of 2011 - Top 15
If you’re anything like me, a lot of the “must listen to” albums of 2011 won’t get a spin from me until like 2014 and then I’ll just be trying to catch up and let’s face it, we’re never going to catch up. I’m still giving first spins to some of the Best Albums of the 90’s. Oh well, here it goes… 1. Wye Oak - Civilian After having...

My Father's Birthday & Baby Update
My father, Don Elias, turns 61 today. Wow! Sixty-One (3 years shy of that Beatles song) That’s insane, I’ve been telling people my dad is young, that “he’s like 50 something. I think like early 50s.” Not anymore. Our old man is 61 and as he told me over the phone today, “ya voy en la bajada.” Luckily for him, my siblings and I have done a pretty amazing...

I Try My Best To Keep To Myself About These...
But I watch the videos and I see all the pictures. I’m open to anyone willing to explain their version of what Occupy Wall Street protests as well as other protests means to them. I form my own opinions and thoughts but I don’t say much because I don’t like sticking my foot in my mouth about things I don’t completely understand. But I will say this, those protesters from...

AMAPOLA SOPES
elbigjim: So today after the gym I got this craving for Amapola SOPES. If you don’t know what these are…. you are Extremely missing out! I was born and raised in South LA and when mom would take us to the SUPERIOR supermarket it always included a quick trip across the street to the AMAPOLA Market for masa because of course we were getting ready to eat PUPUSAS real soon. But before we would leave...

Reminders
Lissette does things that remind me why I’m in love with this woman. When you’re in a relationship for a long time, you tend to overlook a lot of the little things that you probably did when you were courting each other. (Courting is what “trying to hit it” is now) Maybe you don’t say certain things too often or do things that lets the other person know, “Hey,...

My Editorial for The New Record's Newsletter
I wrote one, check it out. A few weeks ago we saw the closing of a legendary Louisville, KY record store, Ear X-Tacy. Yet last week, Amoeba Records in Hollywood celebrated it’s 10 Year Anniversary. It’s no secret that the record industry is a little unstable right now… everything is unpredictable.  I’m sure a lot of record stores are shaking in their boots, hoping that shoppers purchase music as...

sideonedummyrecords: A great message from Jim James of My Morning Jacket on the closing of legendary Louisville, KY Record Store Ear X-Tacy. “there is a tear in my eye right now as i hear about the closing of one of my favorite places on earth- ear-xtacy. i send thanks and healing vibes to john and everyone who has worked so hard at the store over the years…the presence of that sacred place...

Big Jim hits 34
Yesterday was my brother’s birthday. The big man hit 34 years yesterday. He has his own blog on tumblr if you’d like to follow. He’s got a house being built for him and at 34 years of age he’s built himself a nice little family too. No need to look high and low for inspiration, some of my heroes are blood. Happy Birthday, Brotha!
