Virginia / David Bazan / Strange Negotiations

David Bazan - “Virginia”

Songs like this are why ‘Strange Negotiations’ should be on MANY Best Albums of 2011 lists.

Virginia I had a dream that you invited us over
You still lived on the street where you laid down for good
We all sat on the floor as my kids swam around us
You smoked cigarettes like I knew you would

We were worried about your personal salvation
Was it heaven or hell that you saw when your eyes closed?
You smiled at us, floating high above the question
Like you knew something we didn’t know

Virginia I had a dream we were closer than brothers
Singing, pictures of you, crashing cars, skipping school
We drove all over town as the days blurred around us
We wore out your cassettes, we were nobody’s fool

They were worried about our high school graduation
They read us a poem, “Oh the Places You’ll Go”
You smiled it off, floating high above the question
Like you knew something they didn’t know

A great performance of “Virginia” live on KEXP.

"

Slowly, I stroll, over where you sit,
it took so long, now I’m into it.

Sweetheart, lover, I wanted you before,
but when the heart beats next to me I want it even more.

"

My Morning Jacket - Sweetheart

"

What do you do now that I’m gone?
I spend most nights alone, singing songs in my room,
and all of them are for you.

It’s an awful sinking feeling when your own heart starts stealing
reason from the mind. Some nights I dream of getting in my car,
and driving straight through the night.

– Fake Problems - Ghost to Coast

"

Me acerco al agua
Bebiendo tu beso
La luz de tu cara
La luz de tu cuerpo

Es ruego el quererte
Es canto de mudo
Mirada de ciego
Secreto desnudo

Me entrego a tus brazos
Con miedo y con calma
Y un ruego en la boca
Y un ruego en el alma

Con toda palabra
Con toda sonrisa
Con toda mirada
Con toda caricia

"

Lhasa De Sela

"I jumped in the river and what did I see?
Black-eyed angels swam with me
A moon full of stars and astral cards
AND All the figures I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
All my past and futures
And we all went to heaven in a little row boat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt"

Radiohead - Pyramid Song

These lyrics are simply beautiful.

"

In Southern California, dreams wake up for you
And when you wake up here, you wake up everywhere

In the flow of the ocean, and the warmth of the rays
Heard music in the air, and in the waves
The wind chimed, laughter rhymed
We had nothing but time
In Southern California, I heard the voice of my mind

"

Brian Wilson

"I need a crowd of people, but I can’t face them day to day
I need a crowd of people, but I can’t face them day to day
Though my problems are meaningless, that don’t make them go away
I need a crowd of people, but I can’t face them day to day."

On The Beach - Neil Young
